This term, Holly Bagwell was selected from hundreds of applicants to represent Auckland at BLAKE Inspire – a week-long environmental leadership programme for young New Zealanders.
Sixty Year 11-13 students from around New Zealand gathered together to learn about critical environmental issues facing our country and ways to take action to tackle the challenges. Holly learned about climate change, biodiversity, marine and freshwater issues. She enjoyed the opportunity to go Black Water Rafting at Waitomo, take part in a parliament simulation and complete NIWA Marine Science activities at Raglan. Holly also gained a greater understanding of Māori by exploring the way connections and relationships are made through Tikanga.
At the end of the week, all delegates created and presented an action plan.
Holly says she focused her action plan on developing a workshop series and outdoor classroom to teach students about future regenerative gardens at Long Bay College.
