Exploring Futures: Career Pathways at Long Bay College

It’s been a busy and productive start to the year at the Long Bay College Careers Centre.

This term, we hosted lunchtime sessions with New Zealand’s universities which were, as always, very popular. Whitecliffe also visited to speak with students interested in fine arts pathways. Our Gateway students have been preparing for their upcoming work experience placements, attending workshops in First Aid, Health & Safety, and Customer Service, with placement meetings taking place throughout the term. Katherine Thomas has been meeting with all Year 13 students to discuss their plans for life after school, ensuring they have the guidance and support they need. Students interested in astronomy had the opportunity to apply for the Elaine P. Snowden Astronomy School programme, a fantastic experience for those considering studying the subject at university.

Looking ahead to Term 2, there are plenty of opportunities for students to explore different career and study pathways. A major highlight will be the North Shore Careers Expo, running on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th May at North Shore Stadium. This event is a great chance for students to connect with universities, industry training organisations, and potential employers.

Our Gateway students will begin their work experience placements across a variety of industries, including early childhood education and construction. We have excellent partnerships with local businesses, as well as SkyCity and AJ Hackett Bungy. STAR courses will continue to provide hands-on learning opportunities in areas such as IT, tourism, and barista skills.

Tourism students will benefit from a visit by QRC (Queenstown Resort College), who will speak with Level 2 and Level 3 classes about careers in the hospitality and tourism industries. Selected students will also have the chance to visit AUT’s School of Health to explore options in health sciences, as well as AUT’s Communications to discuss pathways in media studies.

Students considering a career in the New Zealand Defence Force can look forward to an informative session on life and careers in the Army, Air Force, and Navy. For those interested in finance, a CPA Australia accountant will visit to speak with Level 2 and Level 3 Accounting students about career opportunities in the field.

The Careers Centre is here to help students navigate their future pathways. If you have any questions about upcoming opportunities, visit us in the Careers Office.
