Despite the year drawing to a close, there are still so many fantastic things happening at Long Bay College. We’ve held our Arts Awards, Sports Awards, Year 13 Leavers’ Day, Whanau Hui, Junior Performing Arts Showcase, Junior Music performances and our summer sports are underway. Currently, our Year 9 and International students are either away at camp, have attended camp or they are awaiting their camp experience. Trips, such as these, provide invaluable opportunities for our students and staff to bond, learn new skills, take on a challenge that might be outside their comfort zones and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Our building projects are developing quickly; Stage one of M Block was recently completed and blessed by Whaea Drina and Matua Rawiri Wharemate. It is now in use by students and staff. Construction has started on the second part of M Block’s redevelopment. The renovations of our toilet blocks are taking shape with two now complete and six more underway. More will be completed next year. The preparatory work has been completed for our Wood Technology building and our fields across the road on Ashley Avenue are continuing to be developed. The refurbishment and extension of the administration block will be scheduled very soon.
The College is undertaking a school uniform review. We invite all members of our school community to take the time to complete a short questionnaire to help us determine the best possible uniform plan for the future. The survey is online here.
Our Year 13 students said farewell on November 1 and deserve an enormous amount of credit for their final day’s conduct. They left respectfully with pride, care and consideration to themselves, each other and our school. At a time when the media is increasingly on the lookout for ‘click bate’ stories of negative teenage behaviours, their legacy of how to leave is an example to future generations. We wish all of our leavers the very best and warmly encourage them to stay in touch and join our Alumni here.
This term, we have celebrated the successes of our students in the Arts and Sports. We look forward to celebrating our students’ academic achievements at our upcoming Academic Prizegiving at the Bruce Mason Centre on December 9. Parents and caregivers will be notified if their child is receiving an award but we would like to warmly invite everyone along to this important occasion.
The time has come to say goodbye to two of our College’s long-serving staff members. Ms Anne Wilk has been the Executive Assistant to each of the College’s five principals over the past 35 years. She will finish at Long Bay College in December. Mrs Margaret Cleland, our Office Manager, leaves us after 25 years at our school reception. Both ladies will be very much missed and we wish them all the very best.
To all of our community members – thank you for the contributions you have made to our school this year.
On behalf of everyone at Long Bay College, I would like to wish everyone a safe, relaxing and enjoyable summer break. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2020.
Mr CJ Healey
