Tangaroa Taniwha – Waiake Beach petition to Parliament

We are privileged to grow up alongside beautiful beaches with amazing marine life. The Long Bay Okura Marine Reserve is one of five Marine Reserves in the Auckland area. Long Bay Primary School’s room 19 students saw the potential to have our closest reserve extended to include Winstone’s Cove and Waiake (Torbay). They wrote a petition, sent it to Parliament and contacted other schools in the Oneroa Kahui Ako and the wider area to ask for support. Awareness was raised about the petition at Long Bay College assemblies and our students and staff added their names, alongside thousands of others. On November 28, the Year 6 students presented their research and petition to Members of Parliament, Erica Stanford (MP for East Coast Bays), Chlöe Swarbrick, and Marja Lubeck. We now await the final parliamentary decision which will determine the future of our local environment. Thank you to everyone for their support.
