Athletics Day – A Day of Speed, Strength and School Spirit

Mini Relay for Life and Athletics Day 2026 were a huge success at Long Bay College, with over 2,000 students and staff involved across the day.

We kicked things off bright and early with our Mini Relay for Life. More than 400 students arrived at school at 6:00am before walking down to Long Bay Beach to raise awareness and funds for the Cancer Society of New Zealand. It was an awesome show of support and a great way to start the day with purpose.

By 9:00am, everyone was back on site for our Walk of Remembrance. In a powerful moment, students and staff walked a lap of the track in silence to acknowledge those who have lost their battles, those still fighting, and those who have come through the other side. It was one of the real highlights of the day.

At 9:30am, the annual full-school warm-up got things underway properly, led by our prefects, before the competition began. Throughout the day we had strong participation across all events, including high jump, long jump, shot put, javelin, gumboot toss and corn hole. The track events were another standout, with some fierce 100m heats and plenty of house spirit on display.

  • Intermediate Girls: Regan Leith

  • Senior Boys: Gogo Gjorgjevikj

We wrapped up the day with the always-popular house relays, where staff and students go head-to-head for ultimate glory. It came down to the final 100m, with Mr Bailey powering down the main straight and Mr O’Leary in hot pursuit, with Mr Carroll following soon after. Tieke House winning the gold in the house relay.

A huge shout out to the Sport and HPE team for delivering such an awesome event, and a big thank you to all staff who supported on events or helped manage boundaries around the school. It was a massive day, and the students absolutely loved it.

Congratulations to Takahe House for taking home the Athletics Cup for 2026!
