Strong Start for Long Bay College Sports Academy

Long Bay College is delighted to share the early success of its newly launched Sports Academy, introduced in 2026 to support and develop promising young athletes as they begin their secondary school journey.

The Academy has been designed to provide a seamless pathway from intermediate to high school sport, working closely with Northcross Intermediate and local sporting organisations. In its first year, 23 Year 9 students have joined the football programme, with training and development aligned alongside East Coast Bays AFC to ensure a balanced approach to both performance and wellbeing.

Students are benefiting from a holistic programme that goes well beyond skill development. Alongside on-field training, they take part in strength and conditioning, movement sessions and learning that builds their understanding of what it takes to succeed in sport. Just as importantly, the Academy promotes strong values such as discipline, teamwork and resilience, helping students grow in confidence both on and off the field.

Looking ahead, the future is bright. Plans are already in place to expand the programme to include Year 10 students, alongside the introduction of a basketball academy in 2027. There are also exciting opportunities coming up, including guest speakers and an elite sports trip in 2028.

The College would like to acknowledge the dedication of staff who have played a key role in bringing this programme to life, as well as the ongoing support from sponsors who are helping create these opportunities for our students.

We extend our sincere thanks to McVeagh Fleming, one of our valued Gold Sports Academy sponsors. As one of the North Shore’s most established law firms, with more than 100 years of history, McVeagh Fleming is committed to supporting individuals, families and businesses across Auckland. Their strong focus on building relationships and contributing to the community makes them a natural partner for the Academy.

“At McVeagh Fleming, community involvement is an important part of who we are. Supporting the Long Bay College Sports Academy aligns strongly with our values of growth, opportunity, and helping people achieve their potential,” says George Steyn.

Their support is helping to ensure our students can access high quality opportunities that build confidence, encourage excellence and set them up for future success.

We look forward to continuing this journey and sharing more of our students’ achievements in the years ahead.
